In short

Zukedon is a Japanese donburi of marinated fish on rice. At Han Kitchen in Zurich-Oerlikon you can order zukedon with assorted marinated fish for CHF 32.00, or the veggie zukedon with spinach, cucumber, shinko pickles, avocado and wakame for CHF 24.00.

What is zukedon?

The name has two parts: «zuke» is Japanese for marinating or pickling, and «don» is short for donburi, the rice bowl. So zukedon literally means a rice bowl with marinated fish. The marinade seasons the fish and gives it a slightly firmer, silky texture.

We use assorted fish, so every mouthful is a little different. Our zukedon comes with a spicy sauce. If you would rather not have the spicy sauce, just let us know – we can offer you a mild sauce instead.

Veggie zukedon for CHF 24.00

There is a vegetarian version too. The veggie zukedon skips the fish and tops the rice with spinach, cucumber, shinko, avocado and wakame – shinko being Japanese pickled vegetables and wakame a tender seaweed. The veggie zukedon is also marked as spicy on our menu, and the mild sauce is available on request here as well.

Zukedon, sashimi or tartare?

If you enjoy fish prepared the Japanese way, you have a nice choice here. Sashimi is the fish on its own, without rice – for example salmon sashimi (4 pieces, CHF 13.00) or tuna sashimi (4 pieces, CHF 14.00). For tartare the fish is finely chopped, as in our salmon tartare (CHF 18.00). Zukedon brings marinated fish, rice and sauce together into a complete meal, which makes it the most filling of these dishes and a good main course – at lunchtime too, Tuesday to Friday between 11:30 and 14:00. A miso soup (CHF 6.00) makes a good starter.
