In short

Yagi udon are stir-fried Japanese udon noodles with beef and vegetables. At Han Kitchen in Zurich-Oerlikon they cost CHF 28.00, and the vegetarian version, veggie yagi udon with vegetables, is CHF 23.00. Enjoy them at the restaurant or ring ahead for take-away.

What are udon noodles?

Udon are thick, soft wheat noodles from Japan. They are much chunkier than ramen or soba, have a pleasantly springy bite and soak up sauces particularly well. In Japan, udon are eaten in many ways – in hot broth, chilled with a dipping sauce, or stir-fried in a pan.

The stir-fried style is known as «yaki» udon – «yaki» meaning fried or grilled, as in yakitori. On our menu the dish is spelt «Yagi Udon»: udon noodles tossed in the pan with the other ingredients rather than served in broth.

Our yagi udon with beef and vegetables

At Han Kitchen the udon go into the pan with beef and vegetables. The thick noodles handle the heat well, stay soft inside and take on the flavour of the meat, vegetables and seasoning. The result is a hearty, warming noodle dish – perfect on a chilly day in Zurich, and just as good as a substantial lunch.

Our food is cooked by a former chef of Globus Bellevue in Zurich.
