Salmon donburi is a Japanese rice bowl topped with salmon, avocado and a fried egg. At Han Kitchen in Zurich-Oerlikon it costs CHF 28.00 and comes with a spicy sauce – or a mild one if you prefer. Eat in at the restaurant or ring ahead and pick it up as take-away.
What is donburi?
In Japan, «donburi» is both the name of the large, deep bowl and of the dish served in it: warm rice as the base, with a main topping that gives the bowl its name. In everyday speech the word is often shortened to «-don» – salmon on rice becomes «sake-don» or «shake-don», marinated fish becomes «zuke-don».
Donburi is everyday food in Japan: straightforward, filling and complete in a single bowl. That is exactly why it works so well in Zurich, whether for a quick lunch or a relaxed dinner.
Our salmon donburi
On our menu the salmon donburi has three key ingredients: salmon, avocado and a fried egg on rice. The salmon brings freshness, the avocado a creamy texture, and the soft yolk of the fried egg runs into the rice as you eat. A spicy sauce ties it all together and gives the bowl its character.
If you would rather not have the spicy sauce, just let us know – we can offer you a mild sauce instead. That makes the salmon donburi a good choice even if you prefer gentler flavours.
Our food is cooked by a former chef of Globus Bellevue in Zurich.
Donburi in Zurich: salmon donburi or zukedon?
Han Kitchen serves two donburi. The salmon donburi at CHF 28.00 is all about salmon, avocado and egg. If you like a mix of fish, go for the zukedon at CHF 32.00 – assorted marinated fish on rice. For vegetarians there is the veggie zukedon with spinach, cucumber, shinko pickles, avocado and wakame for CHF 24.00.
