Unagi is Japanese for freshwater eel, and our Unagi Nigiri is eel on hand-shaped sushi rice: 2 pieces for CHF 9.00. Enjoy it at Han Kitchen, Baumackerstrasse 46 in Zurich Oerlikon – in the restaurant or to take away.
What makes unagi special
Unagi holds a special place in Japanese cooking. Eel is never eaten raw there; it is always cooked – classically grilled and glazed with a sweet and savoury sauce. That gives the fish soft, almost melting flesh, a lightly caramelised surface and a rich, savoury flavour that is quite different from raw salmon or tuna.
On the nigiri, a piece of eel sits on a small ball of rice shaped by hand. The gently tangy sushi rice balances the sweetness of the eel. And because unagi is cooked, it is a great choice for guests who prefer to avoid raw fish.
Unagi nigiri in your sushi selection
At CHF 9.00 for 2 pieces, Unagi Nigiri costs the same as our salmon and ebi nigiri. On the table it adds a warm, savoury accent between the raw fish nigiri. A round of unagi, salmon and maguro (CHF 10.00) shows the full range: sweet and savoury, mild and bold.
If you love unagi, you will probably enjoy the bolder flavours of our Korean kitchen too. Try our Han Kitchen Special with kimchi and salmon (CHF 35.90) or a bibimbap (CHF 32.90) as a main course after a few pieces of nigiri.
