Oerlikon at a glance

Oerlikon was a municipality in its own right until 1934, when it was merged into the city of Zurich along with other suburbs. Today it forms Kreis 11 together with Affoltern and Seebach. The postcode 8050 stands for Zurich-Oerlikon.

The district was shaped by industry, above all by the Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon engineering works. Its former industrial land has become Neu-Oerlikon, with flats, offices and parks such as MFO-Park. Around the station and the market square, Oerlikon is a lively centre with shops, workplaces and restaurants.

Getting to Oerlikon

Zurich Oerlikon station is served by S-Bahn and long-distance trains; from Zurich main station it is a short train ride. Trams and buses run by the Zurich transport authority also stop at the station, so Oerlikon is easy to reach by public transport.

Hallenstadion and Messe Zurich

Oerlikon is home to the Hallenstadion, one of Switzerland’s largest event arenas, which opened in 1939. Concerts, shows and sporting events draw large crowds: according to AG Hallenstadion, around 937,000 visitors came on 110 event days in 2025. Right next door is Messe Zurich, which hosts exhibitions and trade fairs.

On event days the district gets busy. If you want a relaxed meal before a concert or after a trade fair, it is best to book a table and allow plenty of time.
