The Tempura Roll is the crunchy one on our sushi menu: fried prawns and cucumber, rolled inside-out, 4 pieces for CHF 12.00. Find it at Han Kitchen, Baumackerstrasse 46 in Zurich Oerlikon – eat in or take away.
Fried prawns meet fresh cucumber
Our menu names two fillings: fried prawns and cucumber. That contrast is the whole point. The prawns are fried tempura-style for a toasty flavour and real crunch, while the cucumber is cool, juicy and crisp. Together with the lightly seasoned sushi rice, every bite plays soft against crispy and toasty against fresh.
There is no raw fish in the Tempura Roll, which makes it a favourite with guests who love sushi but have not quite warmed to sashimi or raw-fish rolls yet.
What tempura actually means
Tempura is a Japanese frying technique: seafood or vegetables are dipped in a thin, ice-cold batter and fried briefly in hot oil. The coating stays wafer-thin and airy rather than heavy or greasy. Inside a sushi roll, tempura adds a crunch you would not normally expect from sushi.
In our Tempura Roll, the tempura is part of the filling: the fried prawns sit inside with the cucumber, while the sushi rice holds everything together on the outside.
Building your sushi order
The Tempura Roll works well alongside a raw-fish roll, so both sides are on the table: the Salmon & Avocado Roll (CHF 12.00), for instance, or the Spicy Maguro Roll (CHF 12.00) if you like a bit of heat. To skip raw fish altogether, pair it with the California Roll (CHF 12.00) or the Maguro Roll made with cooked tuna (CHF 11.00).
Edamame or a seaweed salad make a light start. If you are properly hungry, add a warm dish from our Japanese or Korean menu.
Tempura roll to take away
For takeaway, call 077 268 20 80 or drop in during opening hours – we do not deliver. A small tip: the Tempura Roll is at its crunchiest when fresh, so do not plan too long a journey home.
